The basis of a fair game is that everyone plays with the same rules.
MESBG is a game whose rules are written with rigor and precision. Despite this, there are undeniably situations or paragraphs that can create many cases of uncertainty about how to apply or understand a rule. Some countries have adopted their own local FAQ to clarify these unclear points, or else “habits” naturally develop. It then happens during international events that players from different countries are faced with situations where the reading and understanding of the rules is not the same between two players. They are then subject to the decision of the referee, who has their own interpretation. The rulings that result can then be a source of frustration for players and compromise the tactics they had developed during their game. This frustration is even
stronger when rulings differ from one year to another or from one international tournament to another. The basis of a fair game is that everyone plays with the same rules. In order to best meet the expectations of players who make
the effort to turn international events into great hobby moments, a group of rules experts has come together to work on a unified International Convention across different events and to allow players to know, before creating their lists and before in-game situations arise, what the rulings will be on the most crucial points of the game.
This Rules Convention is primarily aimed at competitive players who intend to attend international events. By extension, it is also aimed at anyone wishing to practice in preparation for these events.Local tournament organizers and all casual and beginner players are also welcome to use it, if it can provide them with clear and accessible help in resolving disputed situations.
The Committee has not set itself the mission to be infallible, but of giving a common answer to disputed or unclear rules points so that everyone plays in the same way. Thus, if Games Workshop eventually publishes a decision that goes in the opposite direction to how we ruled, it is of absolutely no importance: we will then adapt the Convention. You may find some of the collective decisions illogical or incorrect from your perspective, but do not lose sight of the primary objective of this Convention. You are therefore not obliged to agree with all our decisions, but you now have all the elements in hand to prepare for your competitive events.
Have fun... and do not forget the most important rule !
